Socializing Through Social Media
In
today's society, almost anywhere you go you can see people on their
phones avoiding human interaction or awkward situations. Technology
seems to have become a gateway to stay in contact without having to be
face-to-face. One viewpoint on social media is that it is being used to
replace human interaction and is distancing individuals from each other
rather than connecting. However after talking to University of Texas
students, many of whom have been separated from family and friends due
to college, it's easy to see that social networking has helped reconnect
with friends that they otherwise would not have stayed in touch with
due to distance.
"I'm from Georgia," Melissa Sineway said. "With
all my friends that don't go here, which is all of my friends from home,
it has helped me stay connected with them."
Matt Gandy brings up the point that social media doesn't control his social life and does not affect his direct relationships.
"Because the people that I want to hang out with, I'll hang out with," Matt Gandy said.
Despite
all of social media's critics, it appears that instead of putting a
strain on relationships it helps foster friendships.
